Guildford is the county's most awkward town to move in and its most rewarding to know. It is built on a hill, the oldest part of it is cobbled, and the housing changes character every few hundred yards as you climb away from the river.
The parts of the town
The High Street and the old centre
Cobbled, steep, and pedestrianised for much of the day. Flats above the shops here are reached either by a shared street door or through a rear yard, and no full-size vehicle stands on the cobbles. We park where one legally can and shuttle in.
The hill streets
Victorian and Edwardian terraces and villas climbing away from the centre. The gradient is the real variable: loaded trolleys want to keep going, and the tail lift needs level ground. Parking fills by mid-morning.
The university quarter
Halls and shared houses that release on fixed days, so the whole area moves within the same week twice a year. Booked as slots rather than squeezed in — see man and van.
Merrow, Burpham and the newer estates
Driveways, turning space and straightforward loading. The easy end of Guildford, with volumes that climb once the garage is counted.
Leaving Guildford
The A3 runs straight to the M25 and on to London or the coast, which makes long moves from here cleaner than the town centre suggests. Moves continuing abroad are on European removals.
Around here
Godalming, Farnham, Cranleigh, Shere and the Hills villages south, all covered from the same yards. Woking is north.

Can you get a lorry onto the High Street?
Not to stand on it. The cobbled stretch is steep, pedestrianised for much of the day and impossible to work from. We park on the nearest road that takes a vehicle and shuttle in, or use rear access where a property has it — many do.
What about the streets up the hill?
Steep, narrow and parked-up. The gradient matters more than the width: anything on castors gets strapped, the tail lift wants the flattest ground available, and in frost we move the start time.
Do you do student moves?
Regularly — the university makes late June and September the two busiest weeks, and those slots go early. A room and a few boxes is quick once we know the block and where the van can stand.
Is the one-way system a problem?
At the wrong hour it costs you time, which matters when a crew is on the clock. We route around the worst of it and schedule loading windows accordingly.
